Twisters is a whirlwind of a good time that will keep you on the edge of your seat with a thrilling new story that pays homage to the original. In other words, if you loved 1996’s Twister, you are going to love 2024’s Twisters. It is everything I hoped a sequel would be and more! Read on for a full Twisters movie review and my thoughts about what age it is appropriate for.

I had two thoughts when I learned there was going to be another Twister movie. One, I cannot wait. Two, they better not mess this up! I am happy to report, they didn’t mess it up! Twisters is not hokey, it does not rely too much on special effects (although they are awesome) and it has plenty of Easter Egg moments that reflect the original. (Glad you’re back! I’m not back!) This is how sequel 25+ years later should be done.
Should I Take My Kids To See Twisters?
I recommend this movie for ages 10+. Of course, this age varies from family to family, but 10+ will easily enjoy it. When we rewatched Twister earlier this summer, we did not watch it with our youngest (7), so we didn’t even consider taking her with us to see Twisters and I am glad we didn’t. There is no question, Twisters is even more suspenseful than Twister. Not to mention things are much more intense with the realism of the CGI compared to the 1996 version. That said, our 12 and 16 year olds loved the movie.
In an ironic twist, my 16-year-old-daughter is the same age I was when Twister came out in 1996. That made it fun for us to watch on another level
Do You Need To See Twister To Understand Twisters?
No, you don’t need to see Twister in order to understand and enjoy Twisters. Although they are some fantastic Easter Eggs from Twister that make an appearance in the new movie, they are two standalone movies. That said, I am glad I sat down with my teens to watch the original together earlier this summer. I think it helped the appreciate Twisters more and since Twister will always be a favorite in my heart, why not watch it again?!
About Twisters:
This summer, the epic studio disaster movie returns with an adrenaline-pumping, seat-gripping, big-screen thrill ride that puts you in direct contact with one of nature’s most wondrous—and destructive—forces.
Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos, In the Heights) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.
As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.
Twisters is one of those movies you really should see in the theater for the first time. The big screen, the surround sound. Disaster movies just hit different in the theater and Twisters is no exception. That said, I will totally rewatch this one at home too!
