Five years ago, Florida Hospital for Children recognized a community need for additional health-based education for elementary-aged students. Working with HealthWorks kids museum in Indiana, the community programs team developed a program for local students to learn about healthy choices through play and Mission FIT POSSIBLE was born.
Mission FIT POSSIBLE
Through Mission FIT POSSIBLE students in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties are introduced to a series of five, hands-on classes lead by a team of secret agents. The agents are on a mission to teach kids about healthy choices that focus on food, mood, move and recharge. These lessons tackle each aspect of physical and mental well-being from selecting foods from MyPlate to getting enough sleep at night.
By giving kids the tools they need to make the best choices, we hope to keep them healthy and out of the hospital, Erica Asti Community Programs Coordinator, Florida Hospital for Children said.
By getting kids involved in lessons with games and moving, the Florida Hospital for Children team of special agents are able to keep kids engaged and learning. Each semester, the Mission FIT POSSIBLE team brings the program to approximately 20 area schools. The kids look forward to the secret agent’s monthly visits, and hopefully are able to take the lessons they learn during Mission FIT POSSIBLE back home to their families and apply those good choices in their lives.
In addition to working in the schools, the Florida Hospital community programs team also teaches wellness classes to families via the Center For Child And Family Wellness organization at three local YMCAs.
The Mission FIT POSSIBLE program is made possible as part of the Florida Hospital for Children’s community outreach program. The Mission FIT POSSIBLE program is divided into three age-based curriculums: Junior, for kids pre-K through 2nd grade; Kids, for kids in 3rd through 5th grade and Teen, for sixth graders and up.
