If you have a dog, you have probably had experience with ticks at sometime. I have had more than my share. Where we live, we back up to a reserve so the woods are basically in our backyard. And because of the large population of deer, ticks are very prevalent. I’ve picked ticks of the dogs, my husband and even one off my daughter. Certain bugs just freak me out, and ticks are one of them.
My tick experience goes beyond just the annoyance and gross removal of the nasty bugs, years ago my sister got Lyme Disease from a tick. She ended up in the hospital to deal with her symptoms, and it was a very tough thing for her to overcome. It is a nasty disease that still gives her joint problems, and it is one that I never want to see anyone else suffer — including my sweet doggies.
Like most dog owners, our dogs are part of our family — they were our first kids. And the thought of them suffering gives me the same hebegebees I get thinking of my kids hurt or sick. Luckily, there is something that can be done to prevent ticks and the diseases they carry.
K9 Advantix® II kills and repels ticks before they have a chance to bite or attach. It provides broad-spectrum protection against fleas, ticks and mosquitoes too. One application provides a month of protection for your dog and a lot of peace of mind for you. (Not to mention that protecting your pets is another level of protecting yourself and your children from the same ticks.)
Protecting your dog from ticks is as important as protecting the rest of your family. The CDC offers these tips for Lime Disease prevention in people:
- Use a repellent – Repellents with DEET should be used on skin or clothing or permethrin for clothing and gear.
- Perform daily tick checks – Especially under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, back of the knees, in and around all head and body hair, between the legs and around the waist.
- Remove attached ticks quickly and correctly – Remove an attached tick using fine-tipped tweezers as soon as you notice it. If a tick is attached to your skin for less than 24 hours, your chance of getting Lyme disease is extremely small.
- Be Alert for Fever or Rash – Even if you don’t remember being bitten by a tick, an unexpected summer fever or odd rash may be the first signs of a tickborne disease, particularly if you’ve been in tick habitat.
- Prevent Ticks on Animals – Use a veterinarian-prescribed tick treatment.
