They say beauty is only skin deep. But when cancer robs you of your health and destroys the image staring back at you in the mirror, it feels like a blow to the gut. Those who have survived cancer wear their battle wounds with dignity, but the journey toward beating the beast is long and made even more insurmountable with lost confidence.
I wish this subject didn’t hit so close to home for me, but it does and that is why I am pleased to support the Look Good Feel Betterorganization and the work that it does.
Look Good Feel Better is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping women living with cancer to manage the appearance side effects of treatment and improve their self-esteem, showing them how they can regain confidence, control and normalcy in a life that is by no means normal.
My life has forever been changed by seeing people I love live through cancer. While their outward appearance may seem trivial on their list of worries, when you can’t control what is happening to your body being able to control one aspect of your life — your appearance — can give you power. For each woman in my life who has lost her hair to chemo, it came as a crushing blow to their self-esteem. When they found the courage to embrace the wig or the bald — they found strength. Strength like I have never known. That is what Look Good Feel Better helps give back to its clients.
And Look Good Feel Better is a free service to cancer patients.
#ReimagineBeauty Contest
In addition to in-person workshops that teach women step-by-step makeup tips, new hair looks, nail care and styling Look Good Feel Better also offers an online Virtual Makeover Tool. Through this tool, women everywhere can experience, in a small way, the help women living with cancer receive during a Look Good Feel Better workshop so that they can “reimagine beauty” and the impact Look Good Feel Better can have on women undergoing cancer treatment.
Through July 1, you have the opportunity to share your #ReimagineBeauty photo from the Virtual Makeover app for a chance to win a trip to the National Women’s Survivor Convention in Nashville (for yourself or for a friend or family member who is a cancer survivor).
All you have to do to enter is share your “after” photo from the Virtual Makeover tool on Facebook or Twitter, using the hashtag #ReimagineBeauty. Not only do you have a chance at a wonderful prize, doing so helps spread the word about this powerful origination and the tools it provides those undergoing cancer treatment.
I had fun playing with the virtual makeover tool trying out new colors, hair styles and accessories. And even though I had trouble centering my head, this is my #ReimagineBeauty:
