Our playroom is over run with toys. But like all playrooms, there are both toys that are played with every day and toys that are barely touched for months. As a mom my goal is toy bring toys into my house that will be played with on a regular basis, and clean out those that are ignored. 

Two of the most popular toys in our house are the play kitchen and anything that can be filled up and pushed around (baby carriage, shopping cart, etc.). Not only do those toys see daily playtime, but they are also the most interactive toys that allow my daughter’s to pretend and use their imaginations. 

Knowing the popularity of these toys in my house, I was thrilled to review Vtech’s 2-in-1 Shop and Cook Playset. Shopping and cooking all in one, it sounded like the perfect toy for my girls.

And it is.

Vtech 2-in-1 Shop And Cook Playset

The 2-in-1 Shop and Cook Playset is a mini kitchen with working lights and sounds that converts into a shopping cart offering two different pretend scenarios. It comes with 20 individual play pieces such as food, utensils, a pot and a pan, so if you are tight on space, this toy is an excellent solution. Because frankly, I haven’t met a kid yet who didn’t love to play in a pretend kitchen.

When I first opened the box, my eyes grew wide at the sight of so many pieces. But I was pleasantly surprised how easily the toy snapped together (no tools necessary). 

While it was simple to assemble, once it was together I discovered my only gripe about the toy. In the shopping cart mode, the “floor” of the cart doesn’t lay flat. It sticks up a little bit because it sits on top of the faucet. The idea is that placing items into the cart pushes on the “floor” and triggers a pressure sensor to activate the sounds in shopping cart mode. A good idea, in theory, but it bothers me. When kids start dumping pieces into the cart it talks (most of the time), which is cool. I just wish it could look more finished when it was closed up. 

My single gripe aside, the kids love it. They don’t notice that it isn’t flat and they have fun making it talk. (By the way, it has an automatic shutoff for all those times it gets left on, which is always.)

The kitchen has three modes of play phrases, sounds and following directions. The cooking directions are a bit too complicated for my two year old to follow, but she will grow into them. In the mean time, she has her sister to tell her what to do anyway.

It was a gift for my daughter’s second birthday, but my oldest (five) is also enjoying playing with it. In fact, I was excited to finally give them each their own space to “cook,” but now they both want to cook on the new playset, of course. The recommended age is 2-5, so while my oldest is really on the cusp of being too old for it, it is perfect for baby sister. And because baby sister plays with it, I am sure they will both play with it for a long time to come. And that is the sign of a good toy.

  130. This is a fun an d wonderful toy to have so a child can learn how to shop and cook with this playset. I know my niece would love to play with one of these! I think my sister is getting her one for Christmas!

  133. I have 3 grand daughters age two. All of them would have enjoyed this set…wish I had seen this before buying other things. This beats those huge kitchens that take up so much room and teaches them too! I love their colorful toys!
