Coco Movie Review

Sissy isn’t afraid of much, but she is terrified of skeletons. Terrified. It started the Halloween when she was two, there was a skeleton at the Halloween store and it freaked her out. She is six and still talks about that scary skeleton.

So, I wasn’t sure how she was going to do with Coco. She wasn’t sure how she would do with Coco. She was very excited to go to the movie – after all, we don’t miss a Disney movie – but she was concerned. I am happy to report that the skeletons are not in the least bit scary, and that she loved the movie.

Actually, we all loved it.

My husband couldn’t stop talking about the beautiful imagery, my oldest found it “sad but awesome,” the dog kept Sissy giggling and I loved the whole package.

This Halloween my daughters asked about the sugar skulls they noticed everywhere, and while I tried to explain a bit about their purpose the full idea was lost. Coco did an excellent job at explaining Dia de los Muertos and its importance while telling a story my children (and I) enjoyed.

About Coco:

Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.
