Have A Sharing And Caring Halloween

Talk of Halloween begins mid summer in our house, with much careful thought going into the perfect costume. This holiday is a big deal in our house, and it isn’t just the costume. My daughter has become candy crazy – I mean cra-cra CRAZY! Poor girl, she has her mom’s sweet tooth.

When it comes to trick-or-treating K’s number one goal is to collect as much candy as possible. In September we went to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party, and she had us all collecting candy for her. It was hilarious and way overboard. The only reason we allow her to go all-out on her candy quest is that at the end of the day we know that she will happily share most of her candy with others.

The process of sorting Halloween loot has become a tradition for us with the whole family getting in the act sorting candy by type. After dumping out the haul and admiring a job well done, it’s time to go work sorting. When the sorting is done, K knows that she will get to keep some of her favorite candy, but the rest is to be shared with others. It’s both an excellent way to teach her how to share something she loves, and a way to limit the family’s sugar intake for the following weeks. But what to do with all of that candy?

There are a number of places to share candy including:

  • Donate to a Local Shelter
  • Thank a Firefighter or Police Officer
  • Share with co-workers
  • Halloween Candy Buy Back – This national program works with dental practices to actually “buy back” Halloween candy for cash, coupons, toothbrushes or creative exchanges. The candy is then sent to our troops overseas via Operation Gratitude. Find a local program near you at www.halloweencandybuyback.com.

While I know that sweet tooth will be on overdrive tomorrow, I just have to remind myself that at the end of the night, I know my daughter will happily sort and part with most of her bounty. (Thank goodness!)

My parents travel a lot in the fall for work, so they have been gone a lot over the past couple weeks. All that travel means lots of icky germs, which means my mom is bound to get sick (at least once). In between cross-country trips, they will join us for some Halloween fun and we have a little gift for Mimi. (Mom, you can stop reading now so you don’t ruin your surprise!)

This fall Kleenex is offering customers the opportunity to share a fun freebie with a friend. When you buy specially-marked boxes of Kleenex you will find a code inside that can be redeemed online to send a friend a Kleenex Care Pack or Share Pack.

Inside the care pack your friend will find lip balm, hand sanitizer, a coupon booklet, Kleenex® Brand Share Pack, Kleenex® Brand Slim Pack and card redeemable to download four songs from up and coming Universal Music Artists. Learn more on Kleenex Facebook page.

We received Kleenex Care Packs to share and decided they are the perfect “gift” for Mimi to slip into her suitcase just in case she meets with sickies in her travels. Here’s hoping her pack will make her feel loved on the road.
