The Fight Against Hunger Rages On

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walmart for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

One in six Americans will not know where their next meal will come from at some point in time this year – one in six! That’s 50 million Americans.

In support of Hunger Action Month, Walmart is working with customers, suppliers and associates to donate up to 53 million meals to Feeding American and $2.5 million for hunger relief. To reach this goal, Walmart is asking customers to get involved in Fighting Hunger Together by purchasing select products from participating food suppliers such as General Mills, Kellogg’s, Unilever, Kraft Foods and ConAgra Foods at Walmart stores. After purchasing products, customers are asked to follow the instructions on the packaging, engaging in the “Give Meals” section of Walmart’s website for hunger relief or use the mobile app, Jingit (which I have written about before), to generate meal donations for Feeding America.

How can you help?

The program runs through October 12, 2012, so if you plan to pick up any shelf staples for your family or to donate to a local food pantry this is a great time to stock up. Through the  Fighting Hunger Together program the purchase of your favorite participating General Mills products, will allow you to turn each product into seven donated meals. Now that’s making the most of your budget to feed your family and other families in need. Since I always participate in food collections during the holiday season, I plan to use this program to shop for my donations to get the most bang for my donation.

Additionally, customers can participate in the Golden Spark promotion for a chance to win $50K for your community. Walmart will randomly award 40 “Golden Sparks” valued at $50,000 each to customers who participate in the Fighting Hunger Together Golden Sparks promotion. The winners will choose a community to receive the funding to start or expand a backpack program that provides vital meals to food-insecure children during weekends when they do not have access to free- and reduced-price school meals. Since the Orlando area has one of the highest percentages of hungry children in the country, I would love to win this for my community!

Walmart Associates also have a chance to compete together for their store to win a Golden Spark by logging volunteer hours.
