LeapFrog Learning DVDs Review ~ Holiday Gift Guide

She comes by it honestly, my daughter loves TV just like mom and dad. (Like really loves it.) So I figure if she is going to watch TV, I might as well make it educational. Luckily, there are tons of educational shows available for the preschool age group. Recently we discovered the LeapFrog series through one of her friends. I don’t know how I missed this series before, but I am so happy to have discovered it now.

From LeapFrog:

3 DVD Learning Collection: Learn ABCs, 1-2-3’s and the basics of reading in this incredible 3-DVD learning gift set with sing-along songs plus a bonus book!

  • In The Amazing Alphabet Amusement Park, help Lily, Tad, and Scout find the letters to start the rides at the amusement park and rescue their firefly friend, Edison! Early Reading Skills: The alphabet, Upper and lower-case letters, Rhyming.
  • Learn to Read at the Storybook Factory with Tad, Lily, Casey and Dot as they decide to put a few new twists on a classic tale and turn reading into a delightful game! Ready for School Skills: Story structure, Comprehension, Reading skills.
  • Tad and Lily need a little number, counting, and estimation know-how to rescue their cute puppy pal, Scout, from a pirate in Numbers Ahoy! Math Skills: Number recognition, Counting, Estimation.

Scout & Friends Phonics Farm

Scout, Violet, Eli and Penny long to learn about new animals. When their magical toy car, Axle, whisks them away to a farm, they discover a remarkable alphabet collection and ABC antics ensue! As the friends get in shape with an athletic alligator, console a sad seal, converse with a high-pitched horse and more, they make their way through the entire alphabet! Early Reading Skills: The alphabet, Phonics skills, Animals.

Why I Love It – I love the LeapFrog series because it is more than just mindless fun. But the important thing here is that my daughter loves the series too. (Because let’s be real, if it was boring educational material it would never get watched.) The cute chacters and easy-to-follow stories make learning fun. Plus anytime my daughter can dance, she’s a happy girl (see bonus features on the DVDs). For the past few months, my daughter’s new obsession is, “What letter does ______ start with.” Then I help her make the sound and guess what letter the word starts with. Because of our new “game” I was particularly excited for K to watch Scout and Friends Phonics Farm where they basically play the same game (except in reverse – looking for words that start with that sound/letter). It is the perfect extension to what I am already teaching her, and (as I already mentioned) she thinks its fun. Yeay for making learning fun! (Oh, and while my daughter loves the frogs, she was so excited about Violet (the purple dog). It’s the little things.)

Buy It – LeapFrog DVDs retail for $14.95 each and are available on Amazon. The 3 DVD Learning Collection (which also includes a book) retails for $29.98 so a great way to kick start your collection (Amazon currently has it for $21.99). The newest DVD, Scout and Friends Phonics Farm is also available on Amazon (currently for $12.99).

Great Gift For – This series is great for preschoolers. The recommended ages for the 3 DVD Learning collection are 2-7 and for Scout and Friends Phonics Farm 2-5.

I am excited that LeapFrog is participating in The Suburban Mom’s Holiday Gift Guide. In addition to all of the other fabulous prizes, the winner will win a LeapFrog’s newest DVD – Scout & Friends Phonics Farm!
