ABC’s Medieval Musical Galavant Premiers Tonight

ABC is about to go medieval on Sunday nights with the debut of Galavant. The new musical comedy has a familiar Monty Python / Princess Bride feel, is full of tongue-in-cheek humor, has guest star appearances and features lots and lots of music.

“If you like Princess Bride, Game of Thrones and Monty Python, you are more likely to like this show than people who don’t.” ~ Executive producer Dan Fogelman

After a sneak preview of the premiere episode last fall, I had the opportunity to sit down with the star of Galavant, Joshua Sasse, executive producer Dan Fogelman and the musical talent behind the show Alan Menken (composer) and Glenn Slater (lyricist) to learn about Galavant. There were a lot of jokes between the Galavant team who clearly has had a lot of fun creating the new series.

In each 30-minute episode the dream team of Alan Menken and Glenn Slater come together to create three songs. Yes, three songs per episode – by some of the biggest names in Disney music. And although Joshua joked about being “conned” into auditioning for the lead role of Galavant (he wasn’t aware it was a musical when he agreed to audition), he and his fellow cast seem perfectly comfortable on screen breaking into song every few minutes.

After the interview, we chatted up Joshua Sasse in the elevator (oh that dreamy English accent!), and he was kind enough to pose for a photo with us. So, fun!

In addition to music and humor, Dan Fogelman wanted Galavant to be as authentic as possible — outside of actually being filmed during the medieval times, of course. So it is is filmed in England, with scenes on real pirate ships and even has an English star (Joshua Sasse).

Galavant will air during the winter break of ABC’s Once Upon A Time. During the first eight episodes Galavant will host a series of celebrity guest stars including John Stamos, Weird Al, Hugh Bonneville, Ricky Gervais and Rucker Hower.

Once upon a time, the dashing hero, Galavant (Joshua Sasse), lost the love of his life, Madalena (Mallory Jansen), to the evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson). Now, our fallen hero is ready to take revenge and restore his “happily ever after.” But it won’t be without a few twists and turns along the way.

Tune into see Galavant on ABC premiering Sunday, January 4 at 8 pm EST with two 30-minute episodes back-to-back. The eight episode series will run Sunday nights in January. Tweet along with @GalavantABC during the premiere using the hashtag #Galavant.
