DIY Mickey Bat Garland Tutorial And Free Template

The moment we got the Pottery Barn Kids Treehouse bed for my daughter, I couldn’t wait to decorate it for the holidays. It might be the cutest bed ever made. I finally made good on my promise to make her a Mickey Bat Garland and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. Stay tuned for my DIY Mickey Bat Garland Tutorial.

Some materials for this post were supplied by Cricut.

My Mickey Bat Garland was inspired by Pottery Barn Kids version (which sold out this year), but cost a fraction of the price to make. Also, I had fun making it and my daughter loves that I made it special for her room.

Materials

  • Mickey Bat Image
  • Cricut Felt (black)
  • Twine (I used silver)
  • Cricut Maker or Explorer
  • Deep blade
  • Yarn Needle

Directions

Download the Mickey Bat image I created for this project HERE. (Available in a PNG.)

Upload the image to Design Space. Choose “Simple” then “Apply and Continue.” You can now use the image to cut.

I made my bats just slightly shorter than 5 inches wide, and I was able to fit 10 bats on a 12×12 piece of felt. (Note, I had to manually place them on the mat and group them in order to get 10 bats cut.) You can make your bats any size that works for you.

Cricut Felt can be cut with a Cricut Maker or Cricut Explorer. You only need a deep blade, not a rotary blade for this project. While a bit thinner than some felts I’ve crafted in the past, what I really like about Cricut felt is that it tends to leave less lint on my mat than other felts. It gets linty, but less. And Cricut felt cuts super easily.

After cutting out your Mickey Bats, use a yarn needle to thread your twine through the Mickey Bats. There is no need to put a hole in Mickey, just push the needle through.

I ended up deciding 8 bats was the perfect number for the garland on her bed. Now, it looks just like a real treehouse all decorated for Halloween.

I have ideas for felt Thanksgiving and Christmas garlands coming soon!
