I love the soft glow of candlelight. There was a time (before kids) when I always had candles burning – day or night. Then I had kids, and I never light candles anymore. But I discovered something even better – battery operated candles. No fire hazard around small children and they can be programmed to turn on and off automatically. The perfect solution for my family – safe, automatic candlelight. Now with a special Halloween craft.
To up my candle game, I decided to take my flameless candles to the next level and make my own battery operated Halloween candles. Why settle for plain candles when you can customize your candles for any season? (Think of the possibilities with this craft – you could even use photos!)
Battery Operated Halloween Candles Craft
Creating these battery operated Halloween candles is surprisingly easy. No really, if you can work a hairdryer, you can manage these. The most important thing is to make sure you get WAX candles. Some battery operated are solid plastic, others are made with wax. For this project, you must use wax ones.
Materials:
- Battery operated WAX candles
- White tissue paper
- Halloween silhouettes template
- Tape
Directions:
Cut an 8.5 x 11 piece of tissue paper. Tape the tissue paper to a piece of copy paper – a couple of pieces at the top and bottom will do.
Download the Halloween silhouettes here.
Print the Halloween silhouettes onto the tissue paper. Remove the tissue paper from the copy paper and cut out the shapes.
NOTE – I started by cutting a square around the shapes, but after applying the first silhouette, I decided cutting tighter around the shapes made application easier.
Place the shape on the candle, and use a hairdryer to melt the wax. (High heat.) As the wax melts, you will see the tissue paper darken as the wax seeps through the tissue.
Tip, I took several breaks during this process so I didn’t melt the candle too much. At one point, I put my finger right on the image leaving a big ugly fingerprint, but one blast of the hairdryer and it fixed itself.
Once the wax has covered all of the tissue paper, you are done.
Place the RAYOVAC® batteries in the candle and power up your new Halloween decor.
I am so very pleased with the way these candles turned out. They look great both lit and unlit on my end table as part of my Halloween decor.
