New Preschool Show Peg + Cat Debuts On PBS Kids

When kids shows are both fun and educational, parents and kids win. And this fall PBS Kids will add another kids’ show to its award-winning roster of educational shows — Peg + Cat.

Premiering on Monday, October 7, the new series for preschoolers follows the adorable Peg and her sidekick, Cat, as they embark on adventures, solve problems, and learn foundational math concepts and skills.

In addition to focusing on numbers and counting, Peg + Cat will also showcase other math concepts such as shapes and problem solving. The new show debuts this weekend, but its website is already live with games and videos. Although my tot is a bit to young yet for computer work (she still pounds on the keyboard), I can see where it would have been a great for her big sister about a year ago. Heck, even though the concepts are a bit young for my big Kindergartner, I know she would enjoy playing the games.

Each episode of Peg + Cat is split into two 11-minute stories that hold kids’ attention with interactive dialogue, jokes, and songs. With storylines that also teach cooperation, perseverance, and resiliency – traits that are important both in and out of the math classroom.

Did you know, “National assessments show that 60 percent of students are performing below proficient levels in math by the 4th grade, and this learning gap is more pronounced in children from low-income families?” Because of the importance of building math skills early on PBS KIDS wanted to address this need through a series that helps all kids build a strong foundation in math as early as possible so they can reach their full potential in school—and in life.

Tune in to PBS Monday, October 7 and check out Peg + Cat with your preschooler.
