If you have ever seen a Cirque du Soleil show, you have probably been left wondering the same thing, “How do they do that?” The acrobatics that unfold on the stage appear almost magical. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to fly through the air with such grace and beauty. This week I had the opportunity to chat with one of the performers for Quidam, a traveling Cirque du Soleil show that will appear at UCF May 15 – 19, 2013.
The best part about chatting with the performer, she’s a local gal who grew up right here in Central Florida.
Mei Bouchard feel in love with performing on stage after attending a musical theater summer camp (see how important summer camps are moms!). Following her introduction to musical theater, she began training as a dancer at age 11. When she was 15, she was introduced to the aerial arts and began to train in aerial as well as dance. Bouchard began her performance career on the Walt Disney World stage followed by performances at Universal Studios.
These days Bouchard is part of the touring cast of Quidam performing around the country Wednesday – Sunday. For the last year and a half Bouchard has traveled across the country performing and doing a little sightseeing. Some of her favorite stops to date have been Hawaii, Chicago and Canada In the fall, Bouchard will travel overseas with Quidam for a one-year European tour. What a fantastic way to see the world!
In Quidam, Bouchard portrays a rabbit and is part of the Spanish Web team. I asked her to describe the Spanish Web performance, and she told me that they climb up and down ropes quickly, without falling, just like the activity in gym class that no one liked. Looking at a performance on YouTube, I think it is a bit more complicated than that!
A few fun facts I learned from Bouchard about Quidam.
- Every cast member does their own makeup for each performance.
- The Spanish Web costumes are made of leather. Sliding on the ropes creates a lot of friction, leather is used to keep them from burning themselves.
- Quidam rolls into town with 15 trucks full of equipment.
- 100 performers, stage hands, costume designers and more travel with Quidam.
