Disney’s Spooky Buddies Halloween Movie Review

For the last month, every time a commercial came on the Disney Channel for Spooky Buddies, my daughter would scream, “Spooky Buddies, Mommy. It’s my Spooky Buddies I want!” It was quite comical. When it arrived in the mail, her face lit up like a Christmas tree, “My Spooky Buddies!” (I am such a good mom.)

K is familiar with the Buddies from their previous Christmas movie Santa Buddies (a fantastic movie). Little does she know the buddies have three other movies – Air BuddiesSnow Buddies and Space Buddies – shhhhh…  At any rate, she’s a fan of the buddies, and it’s not hard to see why.

Spooky Buddies

In the new movie, the Buddies take on a spooky new adventure in which they must help stop the Halloween Hound. K loved that the dogs were dressed in costume and was totally into the whole Halloween theme, but I have to say that the movie holds true to its name, it is a bit spooky.

We watched the movie together as a family in three increments (typical movie watching in our house), and there were certainly times when K was a little uneasy. We talked about the movie and “pretend,” but I was a little surprised at how spooky the movie was for little ones. Don’t get me wrong, it is as cute as can be… but ghosts and wizard spells – it was just a bit spooky.

I have no doubt K will watch this movie several more times before Halloween, after all she still enjoyed it. Even with the bit of spook, I still recommend this movie — as long as you think you kids can handle a bit of spook.

Either way, I think K might find one of the other Buddies movies in her stocking this year!

Disclosure – I was provided the movie to facilitate this review, however, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

  1. I recently bought this movie for my 3 year old son, who has bugged me like crazy to get it for him also, and it scared him to death. We barely got 15 minutes into it and he asked me to turn it off! I was very disappointed that they made the preview look so light and fluffy spooky, but it was not at all! I do not think that this movie should be rated G, it is a solid PG. The ghost dog in the beginning with the glowing green eyes even scared me a bit! I was very unhappy with the way that it was portrayed in the preview and what it really was. Now I am worried that he is going to have nightmares about it! I also had to reassure him that it was just pretend and that there are no such things as ghost doggies. I am glad to know I am not the only one who felt this way!

    • Oh wow – your little one really had a hard time 🙁 That’s too bad. If you aren’t familiar with the Buddies, I hope this won’t “scare” you and your little guy off. My daughter ADORES the Christmas one, it is SO cute! But yes, we have had several talks about ghosts since watching this movie…

  2. Not a G rated movie. Verrrrrry disappointed. Language, spells and dog that sucks the souls out of the other dogs.
    Went in the trash.
