I am a Florida gal through and through and that means when I go out to breakfast and order orange juice the first thing I ask is, “It is real, fresh squeezed OJ?” If they say no, forget it. There is no substitution for real orange juice. Oh people try, I have even had restaurants say yes only to discover it’s the fake stuff. (In which case it goes back!) Hello, we live in Florida support our local farmers and serve the good stuff.
Not only does it taste better, but it is better for you. I cannot understand why anyone would bother drinking the fake stuff. Consider this, 100% juice OR 10% juice + water + high fructose corn syrup + etc. Which would your rather grab to get you going in the morning? Give me the 100% juice every time!
Although there’s no substitute for eating a fresh piece of fruit, Florida Orange Juice is a great way to increase your daily fruit intake. (Hint, hint to moms trying to get more good stuff into their little ones.) In fact, one eight-ounce glass of 100% orange juice provides half of the USDA-recommended daily fruit intake for most adults, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. That’s a great way to start your day on the path to eating right.
I love a cold glass of OJ in the morning, but if you are looking for another way to enjoy orange juice here are a couple of ideas courtesy of Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD.
- In a hurry? No time to sit down and enjoy breakfast. Don’t skip the most important meal of the day, toss your favorite fruit, 100% Florida orange juice and low-fat yogurt in the blender to create a convenient, on-the-go smoothie. (Also makes a yummy treat on a hot summer day.)
- Jazz up your weekend breakfast by substituting 100% Florida orange juice for water in your pancake batter for a zesty, new taste. (This sounds delish. I bet it would also be good in waffles!)
Next time you are at the grocery store, grab a bottle of Florida Orange Juice. You will be adding a great source nutrients to your families diet and support our Florida farmers at the same time. Learn more about Florida Orange Juice on Facebook.
