Gator Spotting At Boggy Creek + The Peaceful Makinson Island

If you really want to explore Florida’s waterways up close and personal, there is no better way than in an airboat. Sure, they are very loud, but the ride is perfectly smooth and the boat’s shallow nature allows you to ride up into the marsh in just a few inches of water. Growing up in Florida I have ridden airboats before, but usually the small crafts that hold only a couple of people. At Boggy Creek AirBoat Rides the whole family – they seat more than a dozen people.

I recently joined a group of bloggers on a 30-minute ride through the peaceful Florida marsh. Of course, the best part was spotting Florida wildlife (gators) along the way. (Next time, I really want to try a night ride!)

We found one! We spotted some babies later too.

Back on dry land, I couldn’t resist getting into the gator spirit. GO GATORS!

Enjoy the ride…

For another peaceful view of untouched Florida, we visited Makinson Island. It is a beautiful spot for camping, fishing or even an afternoon picnic. Only accessible by boat, you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. But good news, I had full cell signal!

We even spotted a juvenile bald eagle. (Did you know they don’t get the bald head until adulthood?)

Check out these Central Florida blogging gals! While we didn’t plan the coordinating outfits (I swear), it was great getting to know Jamie and Mary. (Hi, girls!)

Heart Pounding Fun At Florida EcoSafaris

If you are looking for a little heart-pounding, adrenalin-racing, scream-at-the-top-of-your-lungs fun then look no further than Florida EcoSafaris. Located on a 4700 acre eco-ranch and wildlife conservation area, this is untouched Florida at its best. And at the heart of the natural Florida beauty stand 65-foot wooden platforms that are ready for adventure-seeking to take a leap of faith and step off of. If you think you know ziplining, think again. Florida EcoSafaris has taken ziplining to a whole new level.

When 20 bloggers descended upon Florida EcoSafaris prepared for a thrill we were given the option of the traditional zipline safari complete with seven ziplines and three sky bridges or testing out the first roller coaster zip line in the US, stepping off a 65-foot platform in a dead drop and zipping an impressive 1,300 feet on one line. Having previously tackled the zip safari on my Brandcation adventure, I was ready to face the three extreme challenges head on.

The Rattlesnake

The zip coaster, The Rattlesnake, is just plain AWESOME! What is a zip coaster? Pretty much what it sounds like. Suspended from a harness attached to a metal frame that weaves through the trees, it is truly a roller coaster experience on a zipline. I love to zipline so while this ride didn’t terrify me, it was crazy fun. I tried to video myself on the coaster, but during one of the jolts I must have knocked the camera and turned off the record button so I only got the first half. (Too bad because you miss my big scream at the end of the ride for the biggest bump!) Here we go…

This is another video I shot of fellow blogger Crystal from Simply Being Mommy on The Rattlesnake. Unfortunately, this one ends early too because my battery died! Sorry for all of the technical difficulty!

The Panther Pounce

I don’t scare easily with these things. While I don’t particularly like heights, as long as I am strapped in I am pretty brave. But when it came to stepping off that 65-foot platform for a free fall I was frozen. I mean frozen. I stood at the edge of that ledge for what felt like forever willing my feet to move. It was the oddest sensation. I wanted to step off that platform, but it was like my feet where saying screaming, “No!” I knew I was harnessed, but up on top of that platform you look out with NOTHING in front of you and it is truly like walking off the edge into nothing… Once my feet finally moved, down I went. That step is near impossible, but the trip down is a piece of cake.

The Peregrine Plunge

The final challenge was like a Sunday stroll compared to the death-defining drop. The longest zipline in Florida was an easy ride across 1,300 feet of wild Florida below. It was a beautiful day, and I videoed the whole way down. The only hang up was me at the end. It was a still day with no breeze, and I didn’t weigh enough to make it to the lower platform. So they had to retrieve me by dragging me to the finish line with a rope. This zip allows you to race your partner to the ground, hint the bigger guy is gonna win!

For those who aren’t into that lump-in-your-throat feeling, a nice Cypress Canopy Cycle offers the opportunity to take a leisurely ride through the trees (25 feet up) without all of the action. And for those who never want to leave the ground, you can relax on a Coach Safari. (But the real fun is in the tree tops.)

A full day of adventure including the zip safari and all of the extreme adventures including the Cypress Canopy Cycle and the Swooping Crane (a giant swinging zip that wasn’t open yet) costs $135. If you wanna swing through the trees, I highly recommend the fun! For more information visit www.FloridaEcoSafaris.com.

Hammock Beach Resort ~ Golf, Water-Park, Spa & Family Fun!

On Florida’s east coast, just north of the Space Coast, lies a hidden vacation gem. Until recently I had no idea this vacation haven for families, golfers, and couples alike existed just an hour drive from my house. Now that I have visited Hammock Beach Resort, I can’t wait to return.

Tucked away off the beaten path, Hammock Beach Resort is surrounded by the lush greens of its rolling golf course that surrounds the resort property. A beautiful golf community provides a picturesque backdrop for a relaxing vacation for the whole family.

Hammock Beach Resort

Golf vacation, check. Beach vacation, check. Spa vacation, check. Water park vacation, check. This place has it all. Plus (and this is a big plus in my book) the rooms are affordable, especially if you are traveling with others and can take advantage of one of the gorgeous and huge multi-bedroom options. And and for those who can visit in the “off-season,” you can really maximize the savings.

From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by not only the location and natural beauty but also the attention to detail in the resort design. Eliminating the traditional concierge desk, guests are invited to sit down at individual desks to receive their keys and resort details. And one of the details we were excited to learn about is that Hammock Beach is a “cashless” resort. This means no tipping of the bellhop and everything is charged to the room. Yes, charging to the room can be trouble if you don’t watch your charging habits, but frankly we like the freedom of no cash.

After checking into our room, we took a tour to get a lay of the land. Amenities at Hammock Beach include:

  • A day spa
  • Two, 18-hole golf courses (designed by Jack Nicklaus)
  • Five restaurants – Italian, American, Sushi, Pub-style and Poolside
  • A private beach – with chairs, umbrellas and towels provided
  • A kids’ club – complete with a drop-off program so mom and dad can have some down time and poolside activities kids can enjoy with mom and dad
  • A water park – with family pool with slide, zero-entry pool, adult-only pool, lazy river and poolside restaurant
  • Additional pool reserved for adults away from the water park
  • An indoor pool
  • And much more

Hammock Beach Water Park

In addition to enjoying all of the amenities we could squeeze into our stay, we also took advantage of a few of the more unique opportunities. Since our daughter is really into picnics right now (she has them all over the house, however, she had never been on a real picnic before), one of the very cool options we took advantage of during our stay was an old-fashion picnic on the beach. Guests can order a picnic meal (with several menu options), pick up their picnic basket at the concierge desk and enjoy a picnic anywhere on (or off) property they want. The meal comes in a traditional picnic basket, everything you need for the meal and even a red-and-white-checkered picnic blanket. We choose to have our picnic on the beach under an umbrella, and our daughter was in heaven. One thing to note is that the basket is full, and very heavy.

Hammock Beach

Another unique dining experience we embarked upon was a brunch cruise (sunset also available) on board the resort’s Yacht – the Sundancer - located at the marina. In addition to a yummy meal, we enjoyed a relaxing trip up and down the channel way spotting dolphins and other wildlife along the way. A very cool way to dine!

Hammock Beach Sundancer

Hammock Beach Resort offers so many things for families (and couples) to do that we will just have to go back to try to enjoy them all. One thing we didn’t have a chance to take part in, because it was after a tired little girl’s bed time, is a family movie on the lawn. There is also putt-putt golf and so many fun Kids Crew activities that we just didn’t have time for. There really is no reason to ever leave the property since there is so much to do. My family was perfectly happy hanging out at the pool and beach. Of course, dad enjoyed his golf time and mom enjoyed a spa treatment too.

Want to see some of the fun, check out our resort video.

I highly recommend this resort for a weekend (or week-long) getaway. For those of you local Floridians, it is always fun to find such a gem in our own backyard, and I hope now that you have learned about everything this place has to offer you will check it out too. My big plan will be to go back with a couple of other families because I think it this is a phenomenal place for a group trip!
