What’s In My Girls’ Easter Baskets (Last-Minute Ideas)

What, Easter is in March this year?!?! It always throws me for a loop when Easter is early. I get so focused on my daughter’s birthday (March 21) that I don’t have a second to think about Easter until after her big day. That means when Easter is in March, I am already behind.

Somehow I managed to surprise myself this year, gathering small treats along the way for my girls’ Easter Baskets. I still need treats to fill those plastic eggs, plus eggs (and dye) to dye Easter eggs, but hey, the baskets are done!

In case you need some last-minute ideas for Easter Basket fillers, here is what my girls will find in their Easter Baskets:

Easter Basket Ideas Girls

K (age 5)

  • For a little Easter-themed entertainment – Rise of the Guardians on DVD
  • Because she loves it so much – Sofia the First on DVD
  • Because we need something new to listen to in the car Sofia the First Soundtrack
  • For my wanna-be rock star – a Magic Mic. (Picked up in the Target Dollar Spot some months back.)
  • To keep my little artist entertained at restaurants - a Strawberry Shortcake Play Pack (Walmart.)
  • Just for fun – a Princess Ribbon Wand (Target Easter section)

Syd (age 17 months)

In addition to hunting boiled and plastic eggs, my girls will also be on the hunt for a new treat this year — Hatching Eggs. No, we aren’t giving them a new pet, it’s a cool new toy.

I am sure you are familiar with the toys that you put in water and they grow. Taking this concept to a whole new level of fun, Hide ‘Em and Hatch ‘Em Eggs look like ordinary plastic eggs, but when you put them in water they hatch! (As the water seeps into the egg, the animal inside grows and eventually breaks through the weakening egg-shell.)

Inside the egg, your excited kiddo will find a chick, a bunny or a duck. How cool is that?! Each Hide ‘Em and Hatch ‘Em Eggs pack contains three eggs (one of each). This is a brand new toy for 2013, and only available from Amazon.

Hide ‘Em and Hatch ‘Em Eggs

I am certain K is going to get a kick out of watching these guys grow. I can’t wait!

Directions:

  • Place the eggs in ROOM TEMPERATURE water (this is critical to the grow process!) Make sure the eggs are completely submerged.
  • In 6 – 12 hours you will see small cracks in the shell. At this point you can help your little friend out by cracking the shell (just like a mamma might need to do for her hatchling) or you can change the water and let it continue to grow.
  • You will notice the water (and the baby) will be slippery. This is the material that allows it to grow – it is necessary to change the water so your new friend can grow completely.
  • Continue to change the water daily until your animal hatches on its own or until the animal is done growing.
  • Enjoy your new friend – Once removed from the water shrinkage will probably occur but the animal will harden and is fun to play with!

DIY Easter Peeps & Jelly Beans Flower Pot Centerpiece Craft

I wish I could take credit for this adorable creation, but all of the credit goes to my neighbor who hosted an Easter Egg Hunt this weekend. In addition to stuffing 400 eggs for the hunt (wow!), she made these adorable Easter Peeps Jelly Beans Flower Pot Centerpieces. Not only are they super cute, they are totally eatable. And yep, before I could get back to take more photos — they were eaten.

Easter Peeps Centerpiece Craft

Materials:

Start by decorating your pot. My friend glued a pretty piece of ribbon around the rim of the pot. You could also let the kids decorate the pot with markers or foam stickers.

Cut a cube piece of floral foam to fit into your flower pot. Cover the foam in plastic wrap (to prevent foam bits from getting on your jelly beans). Stick the lollipop sticks into the foam, and slide your Peeps on to the sticks. Cover the foam block with jelly beans. Ta-da – cute and tasty.

So easy, the kids can help.

Happy Easter!
