A Rustic Charm Refresh + Printable Sign

Several years ago a printer took up residence in my kitchen. It was ugly, but oh-so-convenient. No, I didn’t want to look at it in the kitchen, but I like to work at the kitchen table so having it there meant not having to run to the other side of the house several times a day. Plus, there was no room for it in my over-crowded office because it is the biggest printer ever.

Recently we decided to transform our formal dinning room into an office. Because really, who needs a formal dinning room? I can count the number of times we have eaten in there over the last 10 years on one hand. Clearly, we don’t need it.

This weekend, the new office furniture went in and the first thing I did was to evict that printer from the kitchen. Goodbye and good riddance!

Now I get to enjoy our beautiful marble-top sideboard. And as a side benefit that also means I get to decorate it!

I set out to swap high-tech, clunky necessity for some rustic charm combining some new pieces from Better Homes and Gardens at Walmart with some pieces I already owned. You would be amazed how many rustic pieces you can find at Walmart that look high-end with bargain price tags. It made decorating my space affordable.

The first thing I needed was to replace the small lamp for something taller to bring more light to the dark corner. You would think an area that sits right next sliding glass doors would always be bright and cheerful, but you would be wrong. Our covered patio blocks so much light that the little corner behind our kitchen table is a dark nook. Case in point, these pictures were taken at noon.

I love the simplicity of this BHG for Walmart bronzed lamp, yes it is bronzed metal not wood. Although next to the wooded candle stick holder it looks wood. Paired with a small burlap drum shade also from BHG for Walmart it gives off a nice warm glow with great texture.

Adding a mirror to the space helped brighten up the area, plus I totally love burlap right now. I thought about hanging a burlap wreath here instead, but again — light. The burlap area also doubles as a cork board, if you want to tack up notes. Can you believe this mirror is also from Walmart by Better Homes and Gardens? So cute.

I added a personal touch by framing one of my favorite sayings, “Live Often, Laugh Much, Love Always” in a charming wood frame with metal brackets. I couldn’t find this frame online, but it is available at Walmart from Better Homes and Gardens.

If you can’t tell from the photos, I am totally obsessed with owls. The owls in the picture are from my collection. I gave some new height to the short one by placing it on top of a wooden candle holder that I found at my local Walmart from BHG. I debated adding this bronze owl nightlight from BHG for Walmart to the left side, but my husband assured me it was at least one too many owls. So it may end up living somewhere else in the house.

The candle display in the middle of the table has become a staple in my house since I purchased it for a fall tablescape a year ago. I love it because I change out the filler in the dish seasonally. In December, I filled it with mini ornaments. Right now, I am loving the corks, but I am sure I will swap them out soon. The three-piece pedestal hurricane is still available at Walmart by Better Homes and Gardens.

And, of course, the jar candles are my favorite Better Homes and Gardens for Walmart scent — Spiced Pumpkin Pie. (Yes, I burn pumpkin candles year round!)

The final touch is the BHG for Walmart pocket watch clock. Once I actually put batteries in it, it will be perfect. (Notice the books in the background, some of my childhood favorites!)

So what do you think? Big difference from the old clunker up there, right? Now I am ready for dinner guests — with no questions about a printer in my kitchen.
