Stay at Home Dad – for a day…

Posted by 26 August, 2009 (1) Comment

Since we were without Mimi today (on her way to LA), Daddy stayed home with K today so I could go to work. Apparently, Daddy taught K a few new tricks while Mommy was away. I got the following email at 9:07 am.

“So we are sitting in her room and I’m asking her if she wants to take a nap. She says no, of course, and points to the radio. I tell her no, so she goes over and hits the play button perfectly herself and starts the music. She smiles and me and laughs.”

Ahhh yes. In one day away, K learns how to turn on and pause her CD player so she can now listen to her music any time she wants! (She really likes to pause and un-pause it too.)

As if that were not enough, K seems to have developed her own sign for music. She shakes her little shoulders and does a little wiggle then points to her CD player. Yep, K has a new sign! (I wonder what the ASL sign for music really is?)

Cupons for Military Families Overseas!

Posted by 25 August, 2009 (1) Comment

Ok all you coupon clipping mommas, I have a mission for you. Did you know military members and their families can use Manufacturer Coupons up to 6 months AFTER they expire at the commissary on base? Yep, the coupons you can’t use anymore can provide those who serve our country with a little savings!

I was so excited when I stumbled across this web site about an Overseas Coupon Program. It is run entirely by volunteers, and it provides information about how and where you can send your coupons to U.S. Military bases overseas. Of course, the program would love for you to collect mounds of coupons, but anything you have that you can send helps.

Here is the gist of the program:

  1. Adopt a base. (You don’t have to do this, but this seems to be how the site is able to track how many coupons it has helped provide. So, why not?)
  2. Manufacturer coupons only. In-store coupons are useless. No restaurant coupons either.
  3. Clip your coupons as if you were going to use them yourself.
  4. Separate into 2 piles – food and non-food and place into baggies or envelopes to keep separate.
  5. Send coupons no more than 2 months expired so they have time to use them.
  6. Add up the dollars saved if all coupons are used (again, this isn’t necessary, but it helps the web site track).
  7. Mail your coupons to the base.
  8. Report how many coupons you mailed back to the web site.

That’s it! They even give you props on their site for the dollar amount of coupons you send.

Recycled Plastic Tote

Posted by 24 August, 2009 (1) Comment

I once read, “If you aren’t buying products made of recycled materials, you aren’t really completing the cycle and recycling.” That statement really struck home for me. I am huge recycler, I am proud to say that we overfill two bins each week of recyclable materials and not even one full trash can. I have even been known to bring home stacks of paper and plastic from the office to recycle, since we don’t have recycling at the office. But suddenly I realized, what does it matter if I send all these items to be recycled if we aren’t using the recycled material.

Of course, once I started looking for products made of recycled material, true “green” products, I became frustrated at the lack of options available. It seemed that all of the options for things made of recycled materials were (for lack of a better way to describe them) hippieish. Come on manufactures and retailers — the movement isn’t just for hippies any more. Every-day people want to protect the world we live in. Make more things out of recycled materials!

The Suburban Mom Cheese Plate…

Posted by 22 August, 2009 (0) Comment

On a trip to Costco today, my husband found a package of mini brie wheels. Since he has a love for all things mini and brie, we bought some. On the way home he mentioned that he couldn’t wait to try his cheese. I was happy to inform him that we also had crackers at home to eat with his cheese.

“Oh good,” he said. “I will have a cheese platter, mini brie wheels, Baby Bell and string cheese.”

I laughed at his “cheese platter,” and he replied, “What? It is ‘TheSuburbanMom’s Cheese Platter’ it’s not like we are going to buy $12 blocks of cheese. It is fancy –one is brie, one is covered in wax, and string – that’s a type of cheese.”

Ah yes, we have moved on from fancy platters. He was perfectly content eating his cheese and crackers on the couch with our daughter!
